Liberation of Khorramshahr

Liberation of Khorramshahr, Triumph of True Faith

May 24 marks the auspicious day of the liberation of Khorramshahr during the imposed Iraq war on Iran (1980-1988).

The operations of the liberation of Khorramshahr was initiated early morning and with the password of Ali ibn-Abitaleb in 1983 throughout the western region of Karoun, east of Khorramshahr. The main goal of the operations was to liberate Khorramshahr, Hoveizeh, Kheibar, Hosseinieh Station, and Ahvaz-Khorramshahr Road after destroying the Iraqi army and forcing it to full retreat to the international frontiers.

Iranian combatants liberated about 800km of occupied territories after passing through the landmines from the west toward Karoun. They managed to install a bridge on Karoun River, as they reorganized themselves around the main road of Khorramshahr for that final push.

The excellent movement of the Iranian combatants in the second round of attacks from the main axis of Karkheh, western front, stretched the battle around Ahvaz-Khorramshahr Road, and as a result, the city of Hoveizeh became under siege. With a further push, the fainthearted Iraqi army retreated from the occupied city as the victorious Iranian combatants entered.

The third phase of the operations with the password of Mohammad Rassoulollah (S) (Mohammad the Messenger of God) was started in full-scale on Saturday, May 24, 1983, and with the main goal of liberating the beloved city of Khorramshahr. The first and the second defense lines of the enemy fell into the hands of the Iranian troops in the first hours of the attack in the regions of Pol-e No and Shalamcheh. Even heavy air raids could not deter the strong determination of Iranian combatants from their scared mission. By 09:00 AM Iranian forces gathered around Arvand River, and the entire city became under siege from all points.

After a few days of fighting and bombardments, at 13:50 on Saturday, May 24, 1983, the fearless Iranian combatants marched triumphantly through the beloved city of Khorramshahr. As a result, the Operations of Bait-ul-Moqaddas came to an end after 25 days of fight and bravery, the Iraqi army retreated from most parts of the southern territories, and the auspicious liberation of Khorramshahr became a reality and a living legend in the hearts and minds of all Iranians.
